The model can still get part of a photo wrong. Keep paints the subject back in, Erase clears what should be background, and your edits go into the full-size download.

Keyboard: pick Keep or Erase, Tab to the cutout, move the brush with the arrow keys (Shift for bigger steps), then press Space or Enter to paint and Escape to stop.

Tightness trims or grows the cutout, softness feathers it, fringe removal replaces the old background's color where a pixel is only partly covered. Changing one rebuilds the cutout from the mask already in memory.

For subjects that are solid all the way through, like black clothing on a dark background: fills see-through patches the model left deep inside. It is off by default because it can also fill glass, veils, smoke, mesh, and genuine enclosed gaps, such as the space between an arm and the body.

Privacy by design

Your image is processed in this tab using the @imgly/background-removal ONNX model, running on WebGPU where the browser offers it and in WebAssembly otherwise; animated GIFs are decoded and re-encoded locally with gifuct-js and gifenc. There is no server endpoint to upload to — open your network panel and watch.

Tips

Subjects with clear edges (people, products, animals) work best.
Animated GIFs run the model once per frame, so longer clips take a while — you can cancel mid-way.
Animated GIFs always use the fast model — the precision one would be far too slow frame by frame.
Cutout options and brush edits re-composite the cutout already in memory, so neither costs a second model run.
Dark clothing coming out see-through? Switch on Solid-subject fill in Cutout options — it stays off by default because it can also fill glass, veils, smoke, mesh, and genuine enclosed gaps.
Whatever is still wrong can be painted: Keep restores the subject, Erase removes leftover background, and Undo takes a stroke back.
Higher resolution = sharper edges, but slower.
The model loads once, then runs offline.

About this tool

Removes the background from any photo using an ONNX neural net running in WebAssembly. Output is a downloadable PNG with transparency. Animated GIFs are processed frame by frame and re-encoded as transparent GIFs.
